Saschiz Saxon vilage

an UNESCO world heritage monument from Transylvania

In the middle of Saschiz begin an alley what takes you uphill to the ruins of Saxon fortifications. You have about 2 km of walk at the shadow of fir trees and uphill a beautiful view is waiting. This fortress was the first construction with defensive propose.

Saschiz peasant fortress outside the village
The peasants from Saschiz together with people from other six neighboring villages started to build it in 1347 (See the inscription on the North-Western wall.). Two gate towers and fore corner towers watch over. Inside the fortress you'll find the ruin of the old chapel and a 65 m deep fountain. It is said that a tunnel starts from this fountain and connects the fortress with the center of the village.

But this fortress was too far from the village. And because the community prospered they started to build the fortified church in the middle of the village (at the end of 15th century). Unfortunately for today's traveler the only remaining of the old fortifications is the clock tower. As you can see it's very much alike the clock tower from Sighisoara. The tower marks the center of the village even today. It's also a measure for prosperity of the people who built it. Cause not every village could afford a clock in their main tower.
Saschiz church and the clock tower
The church of Saschiz is very impressive due to its huge proportions and the way that the fortifying elements have been adapted. But all the defensive elements are surpassed by the beauty of its gothic architecture: huge arches, massive buttress and decorations.

Saschiz people are famous for their pottery. They started to produce it at about 1700 and its specifics are cobalt color and the enamel which gives it a metallic shine.

I forgot to say that the green walnuts jam and the revent jam are the best you can ever taste. Just try them.

Saschiz arrival

  • by train
    Inside peasant fortress
The "Personal" trains stop here. If you take a faster train you should stop in Sighisoara then take the "Personal" train till in the village. But you'd rather take the bus (the bus station is near the train station).

  • by bus

There are regular buses between Brasov and Sighisoara that pass through the village.

  • by car

E 60 (European road): Brasov - Sighisoara. Saschiz is 97 km far from Brasov and 20 km far from Sighisoara.
