The name of Wallachia comes from "vlah", a Slav origin word used for all Latin people of the Balkans. Transylvanians were called Hungro-Wallachians and Moldavian people were named Moldo-Wallachians.

The name used by Romanians for Wallachia is "The Romanian Land".

By a history and ethnographic point of view, Tulcea and Constanta counties form a different province, called Dobrogea. All the other counties are part of Wallachia, being divided into two provinces:
  • Oltenia-Dolj, Gorj, Mehedinti and Valcea counties on the west side of Olt River
  • Muntenia-Arges, Braila, Buzau, Calarasi, Dambovita, Giurgiu, Ilfov, Prahova and Teleorman counties, between Olt and Danube Rivers
